VISUAL APPROACH
CAMERA

The production of Hey Guys is unique in that it mirrors the process of live streaming in both its style and approach. To create an authentic aesthetic, we’re committed to replicating the real-world setup of streamers, opting for low-budget cameras and a guerrilla filmmaking style over traditional cine-ma-grade equipment and intricate setups. This decision allows us to capture the raw, unfiltered energy of live streaming, while keeping the production grounded and genuine.

LOCKED-OFF
The locked-off camera is often used during moments of stability or formality, capturing the scene in a controlled, static way. this will mainly be used for webcam streams or other interior streams where the characters have a chance to place the camera in a considered stationary position.
SELFIE
The vlog camera, in contrast, brings a more personal, intimate feel. It mimics the handheld nature of modern social media vlogs, allowing the audience to feel closer to Nick. This style often captures the raw, unfiltered moments and will be used mainly for Act 1 and Act 3.
HANDHELD
The main camera technique, where a guerrilla camera team film nick for his stream. This starts single cam with his sister as his only operator, but as Nick becomes more successful, his camera team grows and his streams incorporate multi-cam coverage.

LIGHTING

The lighting in the film is grounded in naturalism, inspired by the Dogme 95 style, using little to no artificial lighting. All light sources will exist within the scenes themselves, relying solely on practical lighting. Despite this, the lighting evolves with Nick’s character journey. In the early stages, Nick finds himself in spaces lit with soft, warm sources and sunny exteriors that create a sense of hope and comfort, reflecting Nick’s optimistic beginnings, BUT As he gains fame, the lighting becomes more intense, with bold, high-contrast sources designed to enhance the vibrant, chaotic energy of his streams and the bustling cities around him. Neon lights and harsh artificial lighting dominate, casting dramatic shadows and amplifying the intensity of his rise. As the story progresses and Nick’s world becomes darker, the lighting shifts again, becoming colder and more subdued. The once-bright settings give way to dim, moonlit scenes and low-key lighting that create a sense of isolation and melancholy, mirroring Nick’s emotional decline.

COLOUR

The colour aesthetic, much like the lighting and camera work, is deeply rooted in naturalism, drawing inspiration from the environments Nick encounters throughout his journey. Each location he finds himself in influences the overall colour palette, reflecting both the external world and his internal transformation. Initially, we use warm, natural tones to evoke a sense of hope and comfort, aligning with the early stages of Nick’s journey. As he rises to fame, the colours shift dramatically to bold neon hues—reds, pinks, and purples—symbolising the excitement and chaos of his newfound popularity. Finally, as Nick’s journey takes a darker turn, the colours become more subdued and colder, transitioning back to a natural but colder aesthetic. This shift mirrors his emotional descent, with the cool, moonlit blues signalling the isolation and loneliness that now define his experience.

ACT 1
Act 1 is a hopeful beginning, with a warm color scheme. Exteriors will be shot in daylight with a warmer white balance to
evoke hope, while interiors will use warm practical lights for comfort.

ACT 2
In Act 2, Nick reaches the peak of his fame, streaming in vibrant cities. His streams are filled with neon lights and lively crowds, shifting to a bold color palette of reds, pinks, and purples. Beneath the chaos, cold moonlit blues hint at the loneliness lurking underneath.

ACT 3
In Act 3, loneliness takes over as Nick’s fanbase and crew abandon him. The neon lights fade, leaving only cold, moonlit streets for him to wander at night.
